all joking aside, whilst I have a fair amount of music for which I did not
own the original CD, most of the original CDs I had have now been given away
to family..

They just take up too much darn space!

I may have lost the plot here - but if you are ripping your cd's to MP3 then
surely the original CD would make
a reasonable backup :-)

Or do you not have the original cd  ;-)
