xAP - The traffic issue

Thoughts on the traffic issue & broadcast (seem to make sense to me, but
thrown together on my lunch break, so appologies if not)

Seems to be some concern on hte level of traffic is these proposed displays
use broadcast networking.

- Only a problem if you have quite a few of these devices
(unrelated thought got a cool name for them yet Mark?)

- Only an issue if networked, not serial, as serial will not interfere with
the rest of your network.

If (big if) you a shelling out for several of these with info distrubuted
of a structured network then maybe some sort of gateway would be in order.
You are unlikely to need high throughput for these, & if using broadcast a
switch is pointless, may as well give them their own 10BaseT hub (by the
time this project is solid a minihub is only going to be a few tens of
pounds). A router or gateway, with single address could then recieve info
>from no broadcast on main network.

Does introduce a single point of failure tho, & add to development time &
cost.

Those with managed switches could do all this in software on the switch
anyway.
