In a previous life I used to routinely patch serial cables right across a
5-storey office building over the CAT5 structured cabling system using RJ45
to 9-pin D-Sub dongles...

ISTR I went "way over" the "recommnded" distances
without line drivers, and
I never had a single problem...

So I'd yes, in all probability, there aren't likely to be any distance
limitiations in most domestic scenarios.. (not in my house anyway!)
