He disconnected at the master socket.

Whereabouts did he disconnect it, Chris ? Was it at the socket you were
disconnecting (i.e. just behind the un-used faceplate) or did he
disconnect it at the point where it's connected to the previous socket
??
I'm assuming the latter, as I'm sure that leaving the cable connected
(though not connected to the faceplate) would probably still leave the
attenuation in place ?

OK - so it's almost certainly going to be an attenuation problem
them.....ho-hum.....
