Jason,
I think that it's not bad idea at all, and it's achievable, if carefully planned.
E.g. many people would get an approval from SWMBO if they say that they will get some money for their work. Mine would probably say that she will pay me instead :-), but other's might be even encouraging.
And for the developer itself it's more stimulative.
It doesn't have to be a big project, ending in plc, and doesn't have to be many engineers involved. Sometime one is enough, 2-3 at most for the hardware. Later it can be passed to software developers.
People arround can give suggestions and comments (which should not be misunderstood, even if negative :-), but engineers themselves will make decisions, comments are useful for avoiding pitfalls.
The important thing is that project is well documented at the begining so everyone knows exactly what to expect and people can even start putting infrastructure in place (wires) in the meantime.
If there are 700 users of the group, £10 each can give us a budget of £7,000 which is considerable. Also, some money can be collected through T-shirts and similar.
Of course, I am very sceptical that 700 users will participate. I even think that many of them subscribed long ago and even forgot that they subscribed.
But anyway, if we managed to gather 50 people for London Meeting, I am sure that we can gather 100 per project, which is still considerable.
Cheers,
Nik

I see what you're saying and agree with it, though this is not what I meant
here - I meant that I need a little project done, Nikola has a requirement,
various others need something a little different/completely new.
If they are good for other ppl then great, but not everything has to start
as a big project aimed at loads of ppl.

Yeah, I’m just trying to get the idea out and about.. I changed the thread title to emphasize it as well.

Also, funding matters not a jot if you haven't got the time - eg, I'm sure
ppl would be willing to pay Keith up front for Switcher development, but he
will _still_ be at work 12 hours a day, still have a wife and kid to see,
still have a life to lead - the money won't change that.

Sure, but the idea is to add engineers as well, but then you do have the issue of managing them, and agreeing how best to achieve something.  Sometimes a problem in itself! The ability to listen to other approaches is something I think you learn only thru experience, along with a touch of humility.

Glad for the comments though.

J
