hmm.

An hour or so of google searching, and it seems that 100% of the problem
with "less than perfect" SP-DIF leads is jitter. Whether caused by
reflections of the signal (impedance mismatches) or general noise issues,
jitter is the bad boy.

It can cause subtle changes to the tonal quality of the sound in what you
would consider a more analog way..

the god news seems to be that any good SP-DIF input should be jitter
corrected, and PC systems are inherently better than "native" devices like
early Av amps, because the Computer inherently buffers, and therefore
timebase corrects, the SP-DIF stream..

all cool stuff, getting more impressed with SP-DIF the more I see...  :)
