Many thanks for all the replies - I have now tried several of the suggestions and well pleased but one more question - anyone know of a program that will rip a Live365 stream ??

Does anyone know how I can record a Shoutcast stream to disk (digitally) ? The stream is coming from one of the many Shoutcast stations on the internet and I am always out on the night in question that the program is broadcast.
Do I have to output it on the audio card and then re record it - surely not ! Once it's gone through these convolutions from an already poor quality original it would be really bad on an MP3 player.
