Steve,
The
"toe in the water" solution to the automation piece goes something
like
this. I haven't included the remote cameras or the alarms because I do them
independantly. You will be hard pushed to do a curtain solution other than
a
"bodgematic" on a budget of £1k. Curtain controllers are frighteningly
expensive...
Phase
1:
-
A
bunch of LWs (modules that replace your existing wall light switch - some
limitations, like no 2-way switching, and come on ONLY at full
brightness.)
-
A
few LMs (lamp modules - for plugging in lamps that go into a wall
socket.)
-
Maybe a couple AMs (appliance modules - like LMs, but no dimming, and able
to
handle higher currents) for things like air filters
-
A
simple controller. Maybe the "IR" one and keychain remote, maybe a simple
one
with fixed buttons.
Phase
2:
-
Computer control - a simple CM (computer) module, using the bundled
software. The bundled software is a bit naff, but will let you play
with
timed scheduled.
Phase
3:
-
Complex control - either some better software to use with the CM
(HomeAuomator,
HomeSeer, MisterHouse) or an all-in-one controller like
HomeVision.
Homevision is what I use, and will also give you some relay control
outputs for the garage doors.
Hope
this helps...

My friend, three doors away is an
electrician, me, I’m a software developer with a tendency to any new
gadgets
(been doing .net development for nearly two years). We both have
limited
companies (he employs, I’m a contractor). Therefore home
automation must
be our next step… otherwise we may have to talk to our respective
wives and
kids.
Where shall we
start?
We have an R&D budget of £1000 and
would like to do garage doors, curtains, lights, alarms and cameras, and of
course some Ethernet (but mostly wlan). What do people suggest?
We’re
going to start in the father in laws house (8 doors up) so we don’t
have to
travel far! We can’t rewire as we live in new houses with nasty
plasterboard, so the project must be minimal mess.
Your views please…..
J You know you want to design
from
scratch!!!!
