My friend, three doors away is an electrician, me, I’m a software developer with a tendency to any new gadgets (been doing .net development for nearly two years).  We both have limited companies (he employs, I’m a contractor).  Therefore home automation must be our next step… otherwise we may have to talk to our respective wives and kids.

Where shall we start?

We have an R&D budget of £1000 and would like to do garage doors, curtains, lights, alarms and cameras, and of course some Ethernet (but mostly wlan). What do people suggest?  We’re going to start in the father in laws house (8 doors up) so we don’t have to travel far!  We can’t rewire as we live in new houses with nasty plasterboard, so the project must be minimal mess.

Your views please….. J  You know you want to design from scratch!!!!
