I guess it depends on the size of your room.  Unless its a palace though, 30
ceiling mounted lights does seem a lot.  My lounge is 21' x 11'8 (Approx
6.4m x 3.5m).  When we moved in the previous owners had removed the two
ceiling roses, and but in two wall lighters.  They done this in other rooms
as well, leaving us with a very dark house.  I added two table lambs to sit
on the mantel peice and 9 mains halogen lights in the ceiling like so:-

            +-- Patio  Door --+
                                 Key:-
               o     x     o     o - Zone 1
                                 x - Zone 2
            L                 C  L - Zone 3
               x           x     C - Zone 4
            Fire
            Place
               x           x
            L                 C

               o           o
AMP     TV     FISH (Fish are in planning stage)
            +---- Window  ----+

You might think it would be a little dark in the middle but this doesn't
seem to be the case.  I can't remember the watage of the halogens, I think
it may have been 30w, they are damn bright.

Each light is wired independantley but ends up in distribution boxes in the
ceiling just above the lightswitch.  At the moment there tied together into
the four zones and controled by 2 double dimmer switches.  I ordered the
Lutron Garphic Eye switch which replaces those last week (only two years
late).  I think wiring up the whole house for HA control of the lights will
need to wait till we build our own house.  I'd want a system that worked
independantly of a PC, but could still interface with it.  I'm very
interested to know how your new system turns out.  Lutron does what I want
for now, is very expensive, but I'm only going to have it in one room.

I got mine from Homebase, I thing B+Q do them as well.  They came in packs
of three and the box what mostley light blue or maybe green.  They are flush
mounted in the ceiling (no eyes), mains so no transformer, and are able to
be angled in 1 dimension.

I have a some of mine angled towards the walls to illuminate pictures.  I
guess you can rotate the whole fitting if need be, as long as the springs
have a clear space.  The bigest problem for me was ensuring the lights would
be evenly spaced, but not be under the wooden beams (not going to carve
holes in them just for lights).  To get the lights where I wanted them some
are very close to the beams which means the spring clips which hold them in
place are not fully relaxed.
