True, true...

Basically, I have seen first hand so many examples of really bad encodes,
and had to juggle *insane* amounts of storage requirement,  I always think
people
should try from the bottom up....

so, try encoding with LAME at 128CBR, then increase the quality to the point
where
it sounds great to them. :)

"Really, you gotta suck it and see - try a few different formats
until you find the one that _you_ think sounds best......"

amen to that. :)

I didn't mean it in an 'I know what everyone does' sense, it was
more a contrast to WMA.  I know ppl who swear by 128k WMA, but
equally others who *defintiely* notice a difference between 256 and
320k MP3.

Indeed, even amongst the LAME enthusiasts, there seems to be a lot
od discussion over which is the 'best' method to encode with --
extreme or something like that seems to be the one I've seen
mentioned a lot.

Basically at the end of the day, it's down to personal preference.
Ian, I know you have a _lot_ of experience of MP3, but even so, it
is a subjective opinion and others may disagree entirely.

All IMO of course.

(now where's that rock of yours Ian:-))
