Stephen,
you can still find some of these homecontrol timer/remote/PC kits at 
some homebase stores at greatly reduced prices. I picked up some 
timer kits for 8.99 - 10% last Friday, [they were priced up at 49.99 
so do check prices]. An excellent way to start off HA.
