My basic meteor is one of the older ones and came with some software which
logs calls in both directions and can announce callers. It is standalone
software wise.

The unit itself is passive and only listens to the line state. It is not
possible to either pick up or put down the phone using the unit. I even
asked Crucible on this one as I wanted it to do just that.
