Most ATX PSU's don't have a transformer per se..
They are switched mode power supplies, and pretty high current ones at that.

It has certainly been my experence that home built switch mode units either
work,
and buzz, or explode, and catch fire.

Have you considered moving the display/user interface away from the PC,
rather than moving the PSU?

Does anybody have any information on what is actually in an ATX PSU

as I would ideally like to come up with something similar and just
supply the "CASE" with a DC voltage from a quiet source.

I guess this came up before when talking about the Cupid Cases anyone
got one of those with the external power supply that could take a pic
of it?
