This display I have is also made by Noritake-Itron. I bought the
display because it happens to have a built-in RS232 interface
daughterboad (a "backpack" in seetron speak), saving me having to
faff about with datasheets. The work that I've done is largely
display agnostic - if someone else wants to do the PCB's and provide
a driver (RS232 serial, bit banging code or otherwise), I'll be happy
to integrate with it. Although once my hols are finished, I won't
have so much time to dedicate to this kind of thing.
The backpack approach also has huge potential in minimising the work
required to support displays with different resolutions/cost factor.
I could substitute a USD 50 LCD in place of the VFD at the drop of a
hat, no code changes or further hardware changes required. That's
quite attractive, I think.
