Making
it part of the header seems the wrong thing to do to me. It is specialising
the
message protocol for the specific purpose of sending information to an LCD
display. Which seems a waste given you've just designed a nice generic
protocol.
It
strikes me that the next thing to do now is to start designing generic
instruction sets or APIs for types of devices. Consequently "BELL" would
become
part of the "DISPLAY UNIT" API? I realise you have started off with a
specific
requirement for sending information from devices such as Outlook and
Homevision
to output devices like LCD units, but don't limit it - it's very
exciting.
You've
probably come up with them already, but ideas for extensible device
APIs:
thermostat/generic sensor input
X10
gateway
automation gateway (generic
homevision/comfort/X10?)
alarm
gateway
web
gateway
barcode reader input
and
maybe a customisable processing gateway, so the end user can register which
devices the gateway listens to, how it should format the information they
send,
and then which devices (LCD displays) it should output the information to,
using
which format. Thus the display units can be as dumb or intelligent as you
like,
and the end display doesn't necessarily then need to know how to display
every
possible bit of information. Nor would every input device need to
anticipate all
possible eventualities on how end users would like information
formatted.

Ray.
I
can see how it might be a flag within the Outlook plugin. As such, it's up
to
the Outlook plugin developer (oh - that's me)
Are you saying it
should
be in the xAP-header as an optional item?

For example, you could use it to
convey the fact that an e-mail has the urgent flag set.
Gives the
output plugins the ability to prioritise items to display if they are
queued ?
Really just thinking out aloud.
