The installer uses a very basic X configuration that's pretty much
guaranteed to work anywhere on any card.  I assume that it's unable to
configure your card to work fully for some reason.

This is a bit like the windows installer using an 800x600 SVGA
configuration, then needing extra drivers/whatever installing to use
the full capabilities of whatever video card you have.

Try Xconfigurator then.  See if that helps.
