I have Sony DVP-CX850. A few guys in the group have similar. It's
multiregion enabled (chiped).
Someone said that it's discontinued, but there is a new model which
supports
300 DVDs (or CDs). Mine holds 200.
No more CD boxes over the place. It has the keyboard PS/2 port so you
can
type in your CD (DVD) names and choose them from the TV screen later.
It's
slow and with few limitations but works.
I think that the new model name is DVP-CX860.
Regards,
Nik

Yeah ... my problem with this comes when I want to hold my DVD
collection for such Video On Demand stuff ... I have 300 DVDs (approx)
and my changer is almost full. I wouldn't want to reduce the quality of
the movie by anything noticeable but I guess I could stick with DVDs in
the changer for the projector and compress the movies a bit for piping
round the house to TVs.
Add to that that I would like to archive off programs from TiVo too and
find a way to get my 200+ VHS tapes and 80+ Laserdiscs onto there too
with as little degradation as possible!...
*BIG* storage needed!
Phil

Surely by far the easiest way of doing this today is just to use
Showshifter or Tivo with no subscription as a video server, that way
the
hard graft of software development and hardware matching has already
been done.
A video server in my mind is financially almost there. In disk space
terms alone, say VCD (no point doing more for VHS) quality and an
average of 120minutes per film I reckon that is about 1Gb per film, or
in cash terms £1 per film for direct access and digital storage.

Hi Phil,
I like the idea of the video server. SWMBO would also like this as I
could
get rid of all my hoard of video tapes :o)
I was thinking of this idea with my mate the other day saying we should
look
at a way of putting all my video collection onto hard disk and run a
server
for it. With the price of disks being reasonably low and a decent setup
this
should be possible to build and add to as your collection increases.
Regards
Dave...

> Yeah right, until you get a bargain on the new 1Tb drives ;-)
Has anyone else noticed that it has gone very quiet on the hard disc
front recently? It used to be (or at least seemed to be) that everyone
was pushing for more data and faster access but since Maxtor brought
out
the 160Gb (what - six months ago?) there hasn't been another hike in
capacity yet the price of the 160Gb drives is now down to £1/Gb (ex
VAT).
Usually the price of the "flagship" drives remains high - take
the price
of 40/48Gb 2.5" drives as an example, they were £380ish until the
release of the 60Gb 2.5" drives and suddenly £200 was wiped off their
price overnight.
I just can't help wondering why the price of the 160Gb drives is coming
down without anything to fill that £250 - £300 "high end" IDE
drive
position.
Of course in a couple of years who knows what will be out? I was
looking
yesterday and for £800 you can get 640Gb of storage - 11 years ago I
paid a similar amount (which was a half price "bargain" as I knew
someone at Fujitsu) for what then the absoloutely biggest drive on the
market - 173Mb! That's an increase of 4,000 times roughly...
...now, when are those 1Tb drives due? I feel a video server coming on!
Phil
