IIRC,

 

an RJ11 has 4 contacts in a shell that will accept 4 contacts

an RJ12 has 4 or 6 conacts in a shell that will accept 6 contact

 

Eric stated that the plug has 8 positions and  the OUTSIDE 4 are wired.

 

Sounds like an RJ45 to me, avoiding the centre 4 which are normally used for phone lines.

 

The power will run fine over CAT5
