Yeah, I had that with an Asus board before too, odd one…I still think that was caused by a short and, for the life of me, I can’t figure why it took half an hour or so to reset, but that’s life with PCs ;-)

No, this failed on a Gigabyte and an ABIT board so chip was fried! Totally proved that I was correct a short while ago by firing in an Athlon 1700+XP and it works like a charm, so dead CPU has been proved. Total pain, I had a home for a spare Athlon or Duron CPU L

On the plus side my main machine for games and working is now a very well cooled Athlon 1900+XP J

I've just remembered having a similar problem with an Asus MB and an Athlon 1.3.

I had installed a new MB & Processor, plus everything else - however when powered up, drive lights came on, went off, then nothing, no post beeps, no screen.  I tried this several times.

Removed, re-inserted chip, tried a different chip (same spec).

How I got it working:

Still not sure to this day why it happened, but I left it for a good half hour with the PSU connected and switched on, but can remember if the ATX switch was left on or off (ie. whether I left the mb powered up fully or not) - I think it may have been off.  However the green light on the MB stayed lit.

Upon returning and pressing the button on the front, all powered up perfectly!!!

This was not just a one off either, as a few months down the line, I had to swap processors and the same thing happened and the above fixed it again.

HTH

Cheers

Graham

As I said, I tried two AGP cards a GE Force 2 and a Voodoo 5500, both
with the same result on two motherboards :-(

Funnily enough, if I pull the power to the CPU fan nought happens and
usually that causes the PC speaker to go mental but nadda with both
boards, so my assumption is that the CPU is toast! Shame it was a nice
Athlon 1.4G that was doing a nice job.

There is an upside to this of course...it means I go and get a nice new
Athlon 1900+ in my main machine for games and work etc. and the older
Athlon 1700+ goes into the server :-)
