Oh well, it was worth a try (or not as the case may be!).

Originally I bought the amp with the thought of getting a plasma or
projector later on - only by the time I bought the amp, the missus was
not happy with the 3ish year lifespan of plasma so we didn't get one -
double doh since the DVD player I bought outputs progressive scan on
component outputs only!

Is there such a thing as a converter to do component --> RGB then?

NOOOOOOOOO!

Component video and RGB are quite different formats...

...they just happen to travel down the same spec of cable and have the
same electrical characteristics!

You cannot feed component into an RGB SCART and it work.
