A friend always purchased the same size black hi-fi components. This 
allowed him to upgrade and switch units out without being caught. He
always had the latest stuff but was rarely caught out. Better than an 
excuse any day.

Me? I have done it so many times that I simply get the "not
again" 
remark. So go for the blow out gadget binge and get them past
caring :-)
