You can do it, but in order to stop people from doing it manufacturers tend
to put different connectors on either the cards or the access points.

You need to find out the type of connector and make up some leads. I have
some of the older Compaq cards which have a rubber ducky antenna on them. I
bought some reverse thread connectors from www.rell.com and made up some 8
foot extension cables using RG223 coax.

You'd be able to do the same with directional high gain antennas, but you'd
need to source the connectors yourself.
