I have read there will be a standard and advanced (something like that)
version of Merlin, designed for 16 and 32 meg machines respectively.  Dunno
if this means their RAM or ROM though?

Certainly does seem that flash upgradeable machines like iPAQ will be able
to get the new OS.

Now I just have to resist buying one for the moment and wait for the new
version & hopefully the prices will drop.

Does anyone know if it will be possible to upgrade an old IPAQ with the new
MS Pocket PC version that is out soon?

I am thinking of getting an IPAQ but was wondering if there is any reason

use a PCMCIA to CF adapter so I only have to buy a PCMCIA sleeve but can
still use CF cards.
Anyone tried this?

I'm not upset at all.  You gotta expect that type of thing.  Point is it's
still upgradeable if you want.  Most other PDAs aren't.  No reason not to
install other apps in the main memory either, like you have to do with the
latest Media Player anyway!

Some early iPAQs also have 32 meg ROM I believe (Li?) as 16 meg ROM chips
were in such short supply.

Parcel force costs follow for ENGLAND, WALES & SCOTLAND
excluding HIGHLANDS & ISLANDS. For Northern Ireland, the Standard
service is the same price but the guaranteed services are slightly
more. (shown in brackets below)

Guaranteed delivery services up to 10KGs all have one price as
follows:

Parcelforce By 9am      £31.85 (NI 71.70)
Parcelforce By 10am      £25.90 (NI 58.20)
Parcelforce By Noon      £18.30 (NI 41.20)
(Above include £250 compensation insurance which can be increased for
an additional fee of a couple of pounds)
Parcelforce 24              £14.60 (NI 32.85)
Parcelforce 48              £11.45 (NI 16.00)
(Above include £150 compensation insurance which can be increased for
an additional fee of a couple of pounds)

Heavier parcels attract higher prices.

Parcelforce Standard by weight:

0.5      3.10
1.0      3.10
1.5      4.00
2.0      4.30
2.5      6.50
3.0      6.50
3.5      6.50
4.0      6.50
4.5      7.05
5.0      7.05
5.5      7.05
6.0      7.05
6.5      8.05
7.0      8.05
7.5      8.05
8.0      8.05
8.5      8.65
9.0      8.65
9.5      8.65
10.0      8.65

10.5      and over is flat charge of 10.10

Max 30KG for Standard.

Standard service only has £25 compensation insurance which will cover
single kits. For multiple kits, additional options are:

£100 compensation for £0.40
£250 compensation for £1.00
£500 compensation for £2.00

For the full tariffs, visit
http://www.parcelforce.com/tariff/Default.asp?fromintranet=true
and download the spreadsheet.

HTH.

Mark.

Parcel Force Standard is the same price to all of the UK (even that funny
bit to the left of Wales ;-) so just pick any postcode and try it.

AD10s etc...)

Take a look at

http://slashdot.org/articles/01/09/05/1225259.shtml

and then

http://www.replaytv.com/partners_products/replaytv.htm

Basically it's a tivo, with network interface and up to 320 hours of
record time. Shame about the price of $2000

Cheers

Actually, I've just re-read the article, and I'm pissed off this time. It
really smacks of the "We'll sell you a device based on its upgradeability,
but when you upgrade half of the really useful facilities won't be there". I
get the impression that the features will be pulled not for technical, but
for marketing reasons. That's the bit that makes me cross.

I'm going to scream and scream until I'm sick.

I have read there will be a standard and advanced (something like
that) version of Merlin, designed for 16 and 32 meg machines respectively.
Dunno if this means their RAM or ROM though?

Certainly does seem that flash upgradeable machines like iPAQ will be
able to get the new OS.

Now I just have to resist buying one for the moment and wait for the
new version & hopefully the prices will drop.

Does anyone know if it will be possible to upgrade an old IPAQ with

In fairness I have upgraded my iPAQ's firmware twice now (1.69 and 1.77).
That's the type of upgrade I had assumed I could do.  I was not expecting I
could flash it to the _next generation_ of OS though so this is a bonus,
however limited.

The way things are going a current iPAQ is gonna look very dated even by
this time next year.  Sell to a mate Tim and buy the new one! :-)

This is the only new one. I have digipots. 2-channel PIOs and AtoDs already.
All safe in little boxes waiting for me to have time to do something. :-)

I have the same, though I think there must be some 1-wire device gnomes
somewhere because they are all missing, along with 10 DS18B20's

OK.

So some of the stuff has been out for a while.... but it was news to me.

As to the disappearing devices.... the problem is that when an A/D converter
or a Temperature Sensor required a PCB of Eurocard proportions and dozens of
components to make it work, you couldnt loose one that easily. Now they are
little black blobs with a few legs or worse still a little surface mount
speck of plastic, you cant see them on the bench, never mind finding them
when you "misplace" them !!!

I have the same, though I think there must be some 1-wire device gnomes
somewhere because they are all missing, along with 10 DS18B20's

Subject: RE: [OT] Petrol Pumps ....was Views on X10 Addressing

Because the 4 pumps are actually:

      Tanks 1 + 2
      Tanks 1 + 2
      Tanks 1 + 3
      Tanks 1 + 4

This lets you deliver your "main fuel" (normally Unleaded) to any pump
by filling Tank 1, your "normal alternative" (normally LRP) to two
pumps, by filling Tank 2, and your two "specialist fuels"  (ULS and
DERV)to one each (by filling tanks 3 and 4)

The problem comes when you, Mr. local franchise owner, discover that
no-one in your area is going to pay the premium for ULS, and you've got
a tank that you end up just selling through rather than refilling.

You then wonder "so - what shall I fill it with?", and decide work out
that:

1: Most people buy UL, so you may as well have the "most capacity"
there, and you're still worried about the next fuel protest, and want
your buffer stocks up.

2: You work out that to switch from dispensing UL to LRP or DERV at a
pump is more complex than simply refilling the tank with the new grade.
You need to fit the smaller nozzles (such as fit UL cars) to the pumps,
you need to drain the tanks properly before adding DERV, wheras if you
switch from ULS UL to normal UL, you just top up the tank, and let the
first load of customers get a subtely lower sulphur level.)

Alternatively, you're doing it this way because you PLAN to introduce
ULS later, and want everything wired up properly for the launch.

We have a filling station close by with the "unleaded + unleaded" pumps
...
I've never worked out why that is either!

Where is the best place to buy these - mail order would be preferable and
somewhere that sold a large range of them not like M****** one or two.

Does rapid sell any of them - I haven't ordered a catalogue yet as the new
one is out in October.

Jeff.

Just because you haven't won the lottery it doesn't stop you mentally
spending the winnings!

Because the two different unl. nozzles will come from two seperate tanks.
Most likely they changed a tank from supergreen to unleaded at some point

Subject: CAT 5 testers

I've just started pulling in my first CAT5 runs and thought that I'd
better get myself a cable tester to ensure that I don't end up with
any faulty cable pairs behind new plaster.

Anyway I plumped for the Maplin one that Steve Gordon bought, as like
Steve, Maplin was handy.

Unfortunately I didn't look at the tester before I bought it and I
naively thought that I could just connect bare cable ends to it!
It turns out that the cables have to have plugs on the end and
I just hadn't bargained for that.
So has anybody got any suggestions as to what's the best course
of action?
If I buy a crimping tool and some plugs, can I reuse the plugs?
The simplest solution that I've come up with so far would be to
buy two plugs and crimp a piece of cable onto each of them with 8
croc clips on the end of that or even a piece of chocolate block?

Is it possible/practical to get a tester that just takes bare
cable ends?

Tracey

I use the ones suggested by comfort. I have several times considered
changing everything to one house code as I have an unmodifed IR453 and it
seems a bit of a hassle to have to proxy the requests for housecode B thru
comfort.

Then again I don't really NEED to access the upstairs stuff from this, and I
could always buy the all housecode modification....
