We used to have these sorts of problems with IDA discs in Compaqs - the
heads would stick.

You should have seen the customer's face when we asked them to turn away,
and then promptly smecked the side of the case - you'd be surprised how
many times that worked...

Backup that data, Graham - and buy a new disc sharpish.

Well thanks for all the suggestions guys, at this moment the drive is
working! I called a data recovery firm and they said 95 quid to look at it
and then 450 to 950 quid to get the data off it. I was not happy and on
finishing the phone call was so annoyed with myself for not backing up this
small number of files, that I banged the disk onto the desk about 3 or 4
times. I then connected it back up and it booted straight away without any
errors. Needless to say everything is now copied on to the server and the
disk will now be formatted and consigned to some low usage tasks in the
future.
