Re: Wiring install. How Much ?

Hi Ian,

I think most people on here have read and replied to my age old posts about
wiring up a corporate built house (search the archives for
"sparkie" if
you're bored). Anyway the first spec I put in was for the following (on an
empty shell of a house)...

2400m cat5 - 162 runs
540m ct010 - 36 runs
900m 1.5 cable (lighting)
500m speaker cable (to roof spaces) 24runs
Power to node 0

Total £8700

As you can guess I told them nicely where to place this quote on their
person ;) And went about reworking and juggling some wiring and numbers
around until I came up with this:

36 runs of cat5 (using mayflex (see andy.b's email)) taking the totaly
cables up to about 150
20 runs of ct100
32 runs of hifi cable to ceilings
8 runs for local hifi in lounge

Total about £4500

This is ony some of the things I've done, but it shows the drastic
reduction
in pricing for the power...

Cunning trick to get the price down some, get him to break the price down
per cable type and then argue that £xx per run is taking the mick etc, but
they've pretty much got you over a barel :(

I ended up thinking about it as thus: If you have all this stuff put into
the house, having it working correctly etc, its going to add more than
£3700
pounds to the value of the property. Stick it on a card, take out a loan,
buy it... you will kick yourself when you've moved in without any of this
stuff.

An idea is to speak to the guys and gals at http://www.iphomenet.com/
(Frank). You could ask your house builder if they could come in and do the
work instead of their designated sparkie? I wasnt allowed to do this as
Copthorn (my house builder) wouldnt allow third party sparkies (other than
their approved and authorised ones *cough*). Worth a shot...

*Dust off the digital camera so he can take pictures of wire locations
before they start with the plasterboards*

Hope your haggle

Regards,

Jules

Subject: [ukha_d] Wiring install. How Much ?

Hi All

Today I have received the quote for the electrician to add my extra wiring
to our house that is being built. This basically consists of

40 runs of cat5
8 runs of ct100 coax
12 runs of alarm cable
8 runs of speaker cable
and route all lighting wiring via node zero for me to alter when I move in.
I am to provide all the cables and the price is to only install the cables
and back boxes, I am to terminate all cables and provide the face plates.

The quote is a staggering £3700. What do you lot think ! What would you
consider to be a fair price for the work ? I'm just trying to get some idea
before I speak to them in the morning !

Thanks

Ian D.
