I use CAT5 for:
computer lan (including DDARs)
phone (business and home)
CCTV
video distribution (using KAT5)
alarm (pirs, magnetic contacts, smoke detectors etc)
IR distribution

and the point is that it is as easy to add 2 cables as 1 or 4 as 2 and so
on. This is true 'structured wiring' it can be used for multiple
applications and you don't even need to know what you will use it for when
you install it.

Personally I have at least 4 ports in almost every room, I have 12 in the
lounge and 16 in the office as those are the two areas I use most of the
connected kit. However when I finally get round to rewiring all of my
lights
and light switches, I will probably run CAT5 to each switch too.

There is also the important point about layout of furniture, if someone
decides to move the TV to the other side of the room and the HiFi to the
opposite corner, then what happens with the ports. There is a strong case
for having ports in each corner of a room even if they are not all
terminated at node zero.
