Done a bit of searching and the following chips look useful.

All accept upto 40V DC supply so a 40V feed with 36v backup (3 car
batteries) will keep stuff working even when the power goes off.

All are Maxim chips http://www.maximic.com

MAX 724	5A		2.5 - 35V
MAX 726	2A		2.5 - 35V
MAX 727	2A		5V
MAX 787	5A		5V
MXL 1074	5A		2.5 - 35V
MXL 1076	2A		2.5 - 35V

Datasheets are on the Maxim site for those interested.

I have ordered samples to see what I can "knock up". The fixed
voltage
regulators require only 6 external components and the adjustable ones
require 7 external components.
