You could try talking to empeg.  They designed and sourced a knob for a
rotary push control on the empeg car MP3 player.  Looks pretty good and
works really well on my unit.  They have fairly recently been bought by S3
though but they are really nice guys up in Cambridge.  I'm sure they'd help
you guys out, especially since this project bears a close resemblance to
how
their's began.
