Sounds like a good starter project to me.

Though I wont be able to help out on the hardware side of things, I'll
volunteer to write an interface module for Misterhouse. Obviously that's
further down the line.

If you look at the feature request trackers, there is an idea I added to
Johns origional suggestion.

Can I suggest we add any feature idea's to the feature tracker provided by
sourceforge? You can sign yourself up (or I could just sign everyone up?)
to
receive notification of any new additions to these trackers, which means we
don't have to cross port to the list.
