Or you could use DHCP to assign the IP to the MAC address and use DNS
resolution to give each device a name by pointing to the MAC address,
rendering the particular IP irrelevant.

Makes it nice and easy to alter, or completely redesign the
infrastucture, and it's always easier to talk to a name than an ip.
