Ian,

That's a commercial install, not a domestic application in my experience
for
a system of this nature start with five figures in mind and you're on the
right track, I don't think I can stretch to £10,000+ to air con the house!
The reference I was making was to a simple split system that normally has
the condenser outside the room being cooled and the evaporator in the room
being cooled, normally a small system like that trades at well under 1K, go
to two evaps and you need a bigger condenser, another control unit and
another evaporator - i.e. the expensive bits! The cost then escalates on a
degree of scale from there! Also remember that the system then has to be
charged and maintained on a regular basis, so running costs are not that
low
either. Yes, in an ideal world where money is no object this is the answer
and offers the greatest flexibility, but it'll cost (relatively) mega bucks
to achieve. Where a firm is prepared to spend the money on this type of
system most domestic users are not, hence you get folks baulking at the
price of air-con!

For us mere mortals with a family sized budget the ultimate goal is a
simple
system that can "drive" the cooled air around the home IMO, as
there are
several advantages and this is a list of the things I want in a system for
the HA group really:

* Cost
* Scalability
* Flexibility of installation
* Expandability
* No need for specialist tooling or charging with gas - i.e. plug and play
more or less
* Control via either air vents manually or electrically so each room's temp
can be controlled without the need for expensive control systems.

This is just my opinion mind you what each individual wants is a matter of
personal choice really and what SWMOB says ;o)

K.

We have a split system that pipes chilled water around and it handles
and office with 30 people across 10 big rooms with squillions of PCs.
