On the zoning issue, I'm looking into a loft conversion _before_ I have
kids, and would put in underfloor heating on a separate zone for that. The
two zones would therefore be the loft, and the rest of the house.

If you want to discuss further I'm sure Ian Bird will tell you how good it
is as he has one.  I'm sure with some Dallas Semiconductor one-wire bus
temperature sensors you can write some clever software yourself.  Of
course,
you need to zone your house with motorised valves so you can control the
temperature in different rooms/zones.
