Yes, I've been reading the ftp://ftp.isc.org/pub/usenet/CONFIG/README
file,
and it appears that alt.* newsgroups should get added to the isc.org list
automatically:

"The "alt" and "free" hierarchies are special
cases.  In each
hierarchy, all newgroups are automatically executed regardless of
the mediating factors named above, and all rmgroups are ignored."

As of yet though, alt.home.automation.uk hasn't appeared on any of the (4)
news servers I regularly use, so it looks like it's got stuck somewhere
along the lines.
