SES and ITV have this morning announced a 10 year
carriage
deal, which sees ITV leasing 3 transponders on Astra 2D
ITV will use
this
three transponder to broadcast 16 regional versions of it's network. The 16
versions are made up of 14 ITV regions, along with seperate services for
HTV
Wales and West, and Border Scotland and England.
The agreement
between
ITV and Astra also includes options for ITV to commit to additional
capacity for
other ITV projects.
Commercial and Marketing Director of SES, Yves
Elsen
said: "This is exciting news for the 4.7 million ASTRA digital satellite
homes in the UK. Given ITV's emphasis on regional programming, this
decision to
launch on ASTRA highlights the important role satellite can play in
delivering
local as well as pan-European services. We believe that ITV's programming
pedigree will further accelerate the demand for digital satellite services
in
Britain."
Kate Stross, ITV Finance and Development Director,
said:
"We are delighted to have concluded this agreement with SES. This is an
important first step towards ITV broadcasting on
satellite."
digiNEWS
has not seen any mention in any of the press releases as to whether this
capacity will also include ITV2 from the start. It is also not clear
whether ITV
still needs to secure an agreement with BSkyB for encryption of it's
service.
