I had thought about something like this and putting the projector on the
ceiling, mounting a box round about it, and then mounting the rear
centre below it. Trouble is, that now the proj. is adjacent to an
external wall and there is nowhere to go above it (modern house build),
so I think I could be kinda stuck with it as is due to the fact I would
have to put a bloody great hole in the wall and then mount another fan,
ergo more noise!

Yes, you're quite correct Phil, the MT1 is not that bad for noise
considering the output etc, in fact I looked at the Seleco DLP machine
in Sevenoaks and I really did not think that it was much better for
quality or fan noise, which surprised me. Might have been a crappy
install though.

Yeah ... LCD projectors are even more annoyingly noisy but the MT1 is
definitely one of the quieter units out there.

Basically you need to look at building a box around the projector with a
glass front so that the image can project through. (Be carefull that you
angle the glass so that it's perpendicular to the projection angle or it
will bend the light coming through it - especially if you use "double
glazing" to really cut out the fan noise.) You may find that depending
on
the positioning of the projector that you can leave the front or back of
the
hush box open without getting too much of a noise penalty so if you can
leave the front open then that solves the potential problem of the glass
redirecting the light a bit. (This is more of a problem with CRT
projectors
given the separate RGB guns.)

The box should be large enough that there's a few inches clear space
around
the projector and a very good airflow through so possibly open vents at
the
bottom rear of the hush box and an extraction point at the top front
vented
to the outside world. I was looking at a dedicated flow in and out for
mine
but I don't think I'll have the room in the ceiling void and it's a low
ceiling anyway so I'll probably have to do a "suck through"
design with
the
source airflow being from the AV room itself.

The box should be lined with something dense enough to absorb or mask
the
fan noise. Plasterboard and rockwool are usually pretty good either in
isolation or combination but you need to make sure that there's plenty
of
ventilation for the projector or that baby will die. Sheetrock is great
if
you're housing your projector in a coffee table build but be aware that
it's
bloody heavy and expensive (not only to buy but ship too as it's so
heavy.)
