I thought about using RS bulbs but havent got round to it yet. Its the
ceiling fan in the bedroom and tends to run for long periods because the
PC's are in the bedroom and chuck out loads of heat. Sadly nowhere else to
put them until get round to moving.
I tend not to use the lights in the fan because we also have wall lights.
Its just that on the occasions when we turn the main light we often find a
bulb gone.

Have you tried rough service bulbs? The sort they use in inspection lamps?
I'm sure I've seen them at about £1 in the QWS catalogue.
