I've got a Philips one and I think it MIGHT have crashed once since I've
had
it (over 2 years - got mine free when they were doing the money back
offer).
I think it adds a couple of dB gain to the RF out - same as VCRs do - after
going through a STB & VCR the signal usually beeds some attenuation
because
it's too strong.

I'm quite happy with my Philips, other than there's no (none that I can
find) discrete power IR commands, so my Pronto panels aren't as slick as
they might be.
