1. why not convert a US module and fit it inside the hoover/lamp/wherever
casing thereby avoiding a bulky plug.

2a. If the socket is turned off the module would not be connected!!!!
2b. If the socket is on the module would act as normal.

Another good item would be an x10 plug, you could then connect that to the
appliance (for example hoover) and it wouldn't matter where you plugged it
in!

Just had a thought, what happens if an x10 appliance or lamp module (or
controller for that matter) is plugged into an x10 socket, is everything
still OK or will there be 'problems'
