Well, I sunk a dual metal back box into the wall at the top of my stairs.
When I got back from work one day, Mr BT engineer must have pre-empted me
and moved the wiring from the NTE5 at the bottom of the stairs (via my
front
door frame) to the nice new box I'd left upstairs (much neater as the cable
enters from directly behind).  Clever chaps these BT folk....
