As a follow-up suggestion, you could make up an adaptor that would fit
between the serial port and a connected serial device that worked in this
way, so you needn't lose a port, as long as that device doesn't use the RI
pin itself.
i.e. wire up a straight-through extension cable with pins 1-8 connected
directly. Now, connect your 12v PSU between pins 5 and 9 at the PC end.
Steve
P.S. There's a potential flaw with this Wake-on-Modem scheme that I've
outlined. The CM12U uses the RI pin to signal a received X-10 signal. If
this is connected to a port that has Wake-on-Modem enabled, the PC will
wake
up for _any_ X-10 activity on the power line! Probably not what's intended.

If your PC supports Wake-up-on-Modem, you should be able to rig up a
connection to a serial port that toggles the RI (Ring In) pin. IIRC, RI is
active-high, so you want to switch a 12v DC signal across pin 5 (Gnd) and
pin 9 (RI). If you use a regulated wall-wart, you should be able to use a
standard appliance module.
Hope that helps.

I've a PC i'd like to automate with X10 but the catch is it has an ATX
motherboard and a bios that won't override the powerswitch.
I had though of locking the powerswitch on but that just powers the machine
on and 5 seconds later off again.
Any suggestions ?
Jeff
