Couple other thoughts I just had,

1) Put the HDD into a "real" PC, install Win98, then immediately
switch it
to the Sony and let the Sony fix up the drivers. Will not be the cleanest
install since you will end up with drivers from the original PC but should
work.
2) Put the HDD in a real PC. SYS format it. Copy the Win98 CD to the drive
and do a HDD install on the Sony.
