That's the way that I had done it before but the straight Win98 install
didn't seem to have all the right drivers for the USB floppy and the IRDA
port (and I couldn't find them on the Sony CD).
Seems that teh way I tried last night (using Win2k to format the drive and
then the recovery CD) works a treat!
