Hi Pete,
I have been thinking hard about this one....
If you enable Internet connection sharing on your Win2k box, and let it set
itself up, it changes its own IP address and begins running a cut down DHCP
service. This allows you to leave all your network card settings alone,
when you go home, plug in your laptop and boot up, you will get the correct
IP settings... when you get to work... plug in your laptop and you will get
refreshed IP addresses for work!
With a bit of luck that should work!
I really do love DHCP at times!
HTH
Paul

Jeez guys - too much help all at once! :-)
To answer the various questions:
It's W2k pro, not server.
NetWare is installed and used for company network access, but not all
company
PC's have this, so I guess I'm 'lucky'. Either way, yes, TCP/IP is used
and
is
assigned by the DHCP server.
Re: the point below, NetBEUI is already installed on the laptop due to my
IT
support guys not being able to get the network carding working without it.
It's
not used anywhere though. Sound like an interesting option though - the
less
faff (and extra apps) the better, but unfortunately I don't have a clue how
to
do this!
>From the laptop network props, the following are installed:
Client for MS networks
Novell netware client
Dial up
ICS (this was me fiddling around)
Protable addons portable cardbus adpator (twice - don't ask)
Protocols:
ICS
IPX
IPX/SPX
NetBeui
TCP/IP
Don't know if this helps or note...

I'd be tempted just to add the NetBEUI protocol to both, bound to the
network card on each, and with the MS client bound to it _in_addition_
to what it's already bound to.
That way you won't have to faff around with changing the IP or IPX
settings on the laptop.

Guys
Finally got around to connecting the Switch that I got from Scan ages
ago, but
can't get the PC's talking to each other. All the right lights are
flashing (on
the network cards/dongles & switch), so I think the problem is my
incompetent
s/w set-up, as opposed to the h/w. Bearing in mind I don't know huge
amounts
about networking, my config is:
1 x PC running W2K (and ideally Internet sharing), with bog-standard
100MB
Ethernet card
1 x laptop running W98, and using Novell NetWare when logged into the
office
server (is this the problem?) with bog-standard PCMCIA Ethernet card.
1 x Dynamode switch.
The main PC (W2K) seems to be working fine, and according to the diags
is
sending packet happily, so the problem is almost certainly with the
laptop.
I've tried setting it to 'Client for MS networks' rather than Novell,
but it
still doesn't see anything. When I try to renew the IP address it fails
as it
can't find the DHCP server (obviously), but I still need to be able to
use the
laptop in the office too, so the support boys won't be happy if I screw
around
with it too much. Both machines are set to the same workgroup.
Am I missing something obvious?
Pete
