So, theoretically, I could submit 2 updates the first with a TTL of 900
for all the records. and then 20 minutes later submit an identical one
with the TTL for each record as 43200 (12 hours) and it would cause other
nameservers to pick up the new records quicker???

I must confess I havent been paying full attention to this thread but you
can set the TTL for an individual entry as below.

bob              900             IN              A 192.168.10.10

The TTL being 900 seconds.

Not if I can't change the SOA details. (is that correct??) I thought that
the TTL was part of the SOA record. I'm not sure of anyone who will let
you change the SOA record yourself...
