The front of the keypad is held on with plastic clips at the bottom.  To
take the front off you need access to these.  If you flush mounted the
keypad you wouldn't be able to get a screw driver up in to release the
front.

The keypads are pretty shallow anyway.  Here's a picture of one of mine on
the wall...
