You don't really need a special tool, I just use a small screwdriver with a
thin blade...

Yes, you do really need a special crimp tool, and they can be expensive,
though in an emergency I have used a pair of snipe nose pliers to do the
job (like when my crimp tool was in Birmingham and I was in Norwich.)
