had the same issue with our sonys, we found that if there is a tape in the player on rec and pause that it wont power down like this, cannon may be different but worth a look, this is a real problem with most of the older sony cameras.

I have a canon camcorder (uc5000) which I am attempting to set up with webcam32/homewatcher. Unfortunately after about 4 minutes on record pause (streaming to pc) it switches itself off.
 
I am looking for ideas to keep it on.
 
I tried x10 supply module off/on but it will not be controlled by power supply.
Another option is to put ir signal into comfort and use it...
 
Any other suggestions welcome...
