Sorry to contradict, but I don't think that's quite right.
Modules that don't use a neutral feed (LW10U) are powered by leaking
current
through the controlled device.
Modules that provide 'local control' (AM12U) use current leakage to detect
when the appliance is on or off.
Other modules, like the AD10 for instance, don't leak current in this way.
They're powered directly and don't have local control.

This applies to all X10, in order to pick up the X10 signal there has to be
a small leakage even when the device is off. Dont stick your fingers in the
lamp holder !
This also applies to homebuilt dimmers using triac's to be safe you really
need a traditional relay in series to remove the risk, but this adds cost.
