I was told about this in use at some corporate's office in Cambridge
(may be the same place). Apparently it had one fatal flaw: the system
routes phone call to the phone that is physically closest to you, but
doesn't take into account locked doors etc.

Saw this concept ... utilising SmartCards with inductive Card Readers at
doorways, etc, .... in use in a Lab in Cambridge some ten years ago.
Included auto locator / routing fone calls to extn nearest to person /
log-on to LAN at nearest m/c,  and so on.  Neat.
Never seen it in commercial production/deployment.
